We all have a few insecurities about our bodies, things we would like to change. It could be getting rid of wrinkles or unwanted body fat, or maybe things that are causing us problems, such as overly large breasts that make our back and shoulders hurt. So why do we sit around with these issues looming over us, making us miserable?
Guilt: As women, we feel like we should be doing things for others – our husbands, our kids, our friends – but definitely not ourselves. When something feels indulgent, this guilt is astronomical. In reality, doing something for yourself, something that feels important to you, actually makes you more giving to others. Your body and mind get worn down more easily when you are denying yourself. As women, we need to learn how to get over feeling guilty and start living a little more freely!
Perception: In this world full of “natural” products and foods, we don’t want to feel or be perceived as “fake.” We worry what the people around us will think if we walk into the grocery store with a new nose or bigger breasts. The truth is we all wear make-up, some of us get our teeth whitened on a regular basis, and not to mention those of us who have a standing appointment once a month to highlight our hair to cover the grey. So does it really matter if what is underneath your shirt is a Victoria’s Secret Miracle Bra or 300cc of Silicone? No, not really!
Time: We have so much to do, it seems impossible to make yet another appointment. This is where we have to make some compromises! Fill out your paperwork online, have your questions written down so you don’t forget, do some research on sites like Realself.com so you can find out the answers to questions that others have already asked and schedule your appointment early so you have the rest of your day available.
Cost: Many women are surprised by the affordability of plastic surgery. We assume that something publicized by stars and on reality shows is likely out of our price range. Ask for pricing over the phone so you can get a general idea. There is financing available for medical procedures like CareCredit or My Medical Funding. You can get your procedure and pay it off over the next several months or years, like buying a car. (Only this is a car you will drive for life!)
Fear: The unknown is scary! For most women, the biggest fear is going under general anesthesia. For some women, it is the fear of pain or being nauseated after or during surgery. Talk to your surgeon about these fears – you might not realize all the advances that have been made in the anesthesia process and available methods to decrease pain and nausea. Make sure to have your surgery done by a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon in an accredited surgery center and talk to others who have had the same procedure you are having. Don’t let these issues stop you from making the change you so desperately want! It is ok to become a better, more beautiful YOU!
